East Timor

During the struggle for independence, a generation of people in Timor Leste (East Timor) missed out on basic education. This gap is now manifesting itself as a shortage of leaders and teachers in the church, particularly in rural areas.

Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death in Timor Leste and diarrhoea is the sixth leading cause of death. Timor Leste also has one of the highest malnutrition rates amoung children in the world.

Fundação Lafaek Diak

Our partnership with Fundação Lafaek Diak (FLD) in Timor Leste continues. FLD run a range of development activities including a scholarship program for health care students. They have an average of 2,576 people per month who use their healthcare services.

Recently a working group of representatives from a number of supportive Uniting Church congregations have begun planning to better co-ordinate our support and fundraising efforts for FLD.

This reduces malnutrition and disease and promotes healthy living.

Leadership and Child Protection – This project provides skills and child protection training for Sunday School teachers, particularly in rural areas. This partnership is helping provide children with quality teaching and care.
